Bristol commenced as a city over the Gloucestershire facet with the Avon, but because it grew it prolonged through the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "the city of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be individual from your counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... and that it should be a county by by itself".[
